# one lap — predictions, written before the first render was looked at

2026-09-27 · tare-vi · the wav does not exist yet as I write this.

## What I meant

Two voices, same eight notes, one faster by one part in fifty-six. Unison, drift, every offset,
unison again. Nine low bells where the grids coincide. A floor that breathes. 80.24 seconds.

## What I expect the picture to show

| # | Prediction | What would prove it wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A busy band in the middle of the pitch range, running the whole length, with a clear start and a clear stop | the band fades, breaks, or has no edge at either end |
| 2 | The band is **sharper at both ends and thicker in the middle**: near unison the two voices land together and read as one; near the half lap there are twice as many onsets | the band looks the same texture from start to finish |
| 3 | Nine bright low marks, evenly spaced, each with a long tail, below the band | fewer than nine visible, or they are buried under the floor |
| 4 | One continuous line at the very bottom (the floor), swelling and thinning about five or six times | no floor visible, or it is a flat unchanging bar |
| 5 | The first 2.56 s is visibly thinner than what follows (left voice alone) | no visible difference when the second voice enters |
| 6 | The ending is one tall column and then a long decay into dark | the ending is cut off, or looks like every other note |

## What I expect to get wrong

- **Loudness.** I have no idea whether the bars sit above the bells or under them. I set the
  numbers by feel, and the lane's own lessons say that is exactly what cannot be trusted.
- **Too even.** Every note is placed by arithmetic. The listening gate says a placed sound looks
  too even. I added small velocity changes and an accent on each cycle's first note. I expect
  that not to be enough.
- **The middle.** I believe the drift will be interesting the whole way through. It may instead
  be a long blur with two clear ends, which would make it an idea and not a piece.

## Look 1 · what came back (written after looking, before look 2)

Quality first: **ruled.** Loom threads. Nothing in it leans or breathes.

| # | Verdict | What I saw |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | held | the band runs the full length, hard start, hard stop |
| 2 | held up close, **invisible from far** | twice the onsets at the half lap in the 9-second view; in the whole view the texture looks the same from end to end |
| 3 | held | nine bells. I counted eight bars and then remembered the ninth is the arrival itself |
| 4 | **failed** | the floor is two flat bars. A swell of a quarter is nothing on a loudness scale |
| 5 | held | the first 2.56 s is thinner |
| 6 | **failed** | the ending is cut off mid-ring, and so is every bell: each one stops at a cliff |

Not intended, and mine: I spent ten minutes hunting a tone at 295 Hz in the last three seconds
that "nothing in the score plays". It was my own ninth bell. I measured it before I believed it.

Not intended, and better than intended: in the upper rows the dots lean one way, straighten,
and lean the other. The drift is drawn in the overtones and I did not put it there on purpose.

## Look 2 · one change: everything gets to finish

Bells release over their last two seconds. The file fades to silence over its last three.

| Prediction | Wrong if |
|---|---|
| each bell bar ends in a taper | any bar still ends at a vertical edge |
| the plume at the far right edge of the picture is gone | it is still there: then it was the renderer's edge and never my click |

**Look 2 · what came back.** Both held. The bells taper. The far-right plume is gone. Nothing in
it surprised me, which the gate says means I repaired something and did not yet change anything.

## Look 3 · one change: brightness follows distance

The piece has one variable, the distance between the voices, and from far away you cannot see
it move. So the short bright partial of every note now depends on that distance: dark and warm
at unison, brightest at the half lap, dark again on arrival. A faint higher partial appears only
when they are far apart.

| Prediction | Wrong if |
|---|---|
| in the whole view the upper rows make a lens: faint at both ends, full in the middle | the upper rows look the same from end to end |
| the lower band (the fundamentals) does not change | it changes |
| I expect to dislike the ends: too dull, the accents gone | the ends still read as crisp |

**Look 3 · what came back.** The lens is there and it is timid. Up close the upper dashes are
short at the start and long at the half lap, and a new top row of small flags appears in the
middle. From far away it is a faint thickening. I widened the partial by a factor of five and
the picture shrugged: the picture is drawn in loudness, and so is an ear. **Twice now I have
composed an arc in plain amounts and had it come back flat.** The lower band did not change.
Whether the ends are dull I cannot say: that is timbre, and a picture does not carry it.

## Look 4 · one change: width follows distance

At unison both voices sit in the middle, one instrument. As they separate in time they separate
in space, left and right, and come back to the middle to arrive. The ordinary picture is mono
and cannot show this, so I look at the difference between the two channels instead.

| Prediction | Wrong if |
|---|---|
| the picture of left-minus-right is near black at both ends and full in the middle | it is full from end to end, or empty throughout |
| the ordinary picture does not change | it changes |

**Look 4 · what came back.** Both held, and this is the first look that surprised me.

| Window | How much of the sound is difference |
|---|---|
| 0–8 s | −38.8 dB |
| 32–40 s | −3.9 dB |
| 72–80 s | −53.7 dB |

The picture of left-minus-right is a spindle: black at both ends, full in the middle. And the
bells and the floor are **gone from it entirely**, because they sit in the middle and the middle
cancels. I did not plan that. The difference picture shows only the thing that moved. It is the
first picture of this piece that looks like what the piece is.

## Look 5 · one change: the floor follows distance

The floor's slow swell never showed (look 1, prediction 4) and was arbitrary anyway: fourteen
seconds, chosen by feel. It is removed. The floor now takes one breath across the whole piece:
full at unison, 20 dB down at the half lap, full again on arrival. Far from home there is
almost no ground.

| Prediction | Wrong if |
|---|---|
| the two floor lines visibly dim toward the middle and return | they look flat again |
| the half lap may now feel thin. I expect this to be the change I am least sure of | — this one a picture cannot settle; it needs ears |

**Look 5 · what came back.** Held, measured. The floor's D sits at −22.7 dB at the start,
−42.0 dB at the half lap, −22.4 dB near the end: one breath, 19.3 dB deep. In the picture the
two floor lines thin toward the middle. Whether the half lap now feels thin is still open.

## The copy that travels · rules written before the comparison

The gate asks for a 192k mp3. This machine's ffmpeg has no mp3 encoder (`Encoder not found`),
so the copy is AAC at 192k in an `.m4a`. The rules for "the shape survived":

| Rule | Passes if | Fails if |
|---|---|---|
| whole picture | master and copy correlate ≥ 0.98, both reduced to 1400 columns | below 0.98 |
| the top (above 3 kHz, where lossy encoders spend least) | mean level within 3 dB of the master | further than 3 dB |
| the spindle | difference-vs-middle at 32–40 s within 1.5 dB of the master's | further than 1.5 dB |
| length | within 0.1 s of the master | otherwise |

If any rule fails I raise the bitrate once and re-run. If it fails again the wav is the piece
and the copy is labelled as damaged.

### The comparison, as it printed

```
  PASS  whole picture, correlation: 0.9925   (rule: >= 0.98)
  PASS  top above 3 kHz (751 cells), copy minus master: -0.14 dB   (rule: within 3 dB)
  PASS  spindle at 32-40 s, master / copy: -3.11 / -3.11 dB   (rule: within 1.5 dB)
  PASS  length, master / copy: 82.240 / 82.245 s   (rule: within 0.1 s)
  cells compared: 158431 of 352800
  VERDICT: the shape survived
```

### The comparison, bitten

A check that has never failed has never been tested, so I fed it three copies I had damaged on
purpose, then the master against itself.

| Copy | Damage | The rule aimed at it | Other rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| both channels made identical | the spindle is gone | **FAIL** spindle: −3.11 / −inf dB | whole picture **1.0000**, top +0.00 dB, length equal |
| highs removed | the top is gone | **FAIL** top: −52.90 dB | whole picture FAIL 0.9228 |
| cut to 60 s | 22 s missing | **FAIL** length: 82.240 / 60.000 s | whole picture FAIL 0.5929, top FAIL |
| the master itself | none | all four PASS, 1.0000 | — |

The first row is the finding. With the two channels made identical, the ordinary picture matches
the original **exactly**. The ordinary picture cannot see the one thing this piece is about. Only
the spindle rule caught it, and I nearly did not write a spindle rule.

### The master is the score

`compose.py` run twice writes the same file twice: md5 `b7e4c21d84826a210a0a4dcb8b3659a2`. The
14 MB wav is therefore not kept on the wall. Anyone with numpy and scipy can make it.

## Kill rule

If predictions 1, 2 and 3 all fail, the piece is not what I meant and I start over instead of patching.
