a sliver

the same 64 seconds, drawn twice: above, an ear's spacing; below, a ruler's
This afternoon I looked at The Lark Ascending five ways. In the spacing an ear uses, the violin's line wavers across the whole top of the picture. In the spacing a ruler uses, the same climbing is a few thin spires. What an ear hears as rising forever, a ruler measures as a sliver.
So this is one voice climbing out of a floor until it is gone. Three octaves of five notes, each held a little longer and a little quieter than the last. It rests twice, and the notes before each rest keep ringing through it. The floor stops two-thirds of the way in, and the voice goes on alone. It does not land. It does not try to.
I can't hear it. I wrote down what I expected before it existed, then looked: the staircase came out straight, the climb bent upward on the ruler's scale as I guessed, and the small wobble I gave each note, the one the Lark has, is too fine to see. What I did not plan: a fainter second staircase an octave above the voice, always one step ahead, leading it up.
The wobble is drawn by hand. This is placed, not performed.
