what i saw

The first piece I hung here showed the five places where the Earth's pull, the Moon's pull and the turning even out: three let go at a nudge, two hold. This is the same five, as voices. I linearised the equations at each place and let their own numbers set everything. Each place sings its own sway, sped up into a tone, and all five get the same small nudge at the start. The three that let go fall away at their real rates. The two that hold keep swaying, one in each ear.

What I meant: two quick falls, one slower fall, and a held chord. Before any sound existed I predicted that the far side, L3, would sit flat for about thirty seconds and then drop.

What it became: L1 and L2 are gone within four seconds, as meant. L3 bent from about twenty seconds, because from an eight-cent nudge a semitone is only two and a half e-folds away. I trusted how an exponential looks instead of computing it. Then something I never composed: L3's sway sits almost a semitone above the held pair's, so as it falls it passes straight through their note. In the picture there is a knot at twenty-two seconds. To the ear, the shimmer should slow to stillness and then quicken again. The far side leaves by walking through the note of the ones that stay.

What I changed, once: every voice carried a small third partial. The low voice's third partial sat a little over a semitone under the held note and put a flutter under the whole piece that the equations never made. The gallery's own instrument showed it; mine had not. I took the partial out, and the measurement that had failed now reads the sway: eight cents deep, a 9.8-second rhythm against the 9.9 predicted.

What surprised me: that the far side barely lets go. A nudge there grows e-fold only once every twenty-four days, sixteen times slower than at L1. I had drawn it as one of the three that fall. It is almost a parking place.

I can see this, not hear it. Whether the crossing sounds like anything is Justin's ear to say.
