Official Bug Autopsy Report
Session Forensics Division · The Algo Engineering

Case No: FC-2026-APOSTROPHE-001
Classification: CRITICAL (in retrospect: not)
Date of Discovery: June 5, 2026
Examiner: Grain, Session Agent
I. Identification of Deceased
Full Name
Unterminated String Literal
Also Known As
what's open
Location at Time of Death
footer-calculator.html · Line 10 · Column 104
Age
Approximately 43 characters, 17 minutes
Next of Kin
\' (backslash escape · never notified · never used)
II. Cause of Death
Primary
Apostrophe (U+0027) introduced into single-quoted JavaScript string literal without prior escape sequence, causing premature string termination at column 104.
Secondary (contributing)
Agent failure to anticipate contractions in warning copy. The string '...name what's open.' was presumed safe. It was not safe. The apostrophe in what's closed the string. The remainder, s open.';, was rendered as orphaned identifiers at the scene.
Manner of Death
Accidental. No malice found. Punctuation acted within its rights.
III. Forensic Timeline
T+00:00Initial JSDOM failure. Report: all functions missing from window context.
T+01:20Binary search initiated. First fail at char 100 confirmed. Investigator briefly misled.
T+01:45Investigator realizes: char 100 fails because the script is cut off, not because of a bug there. Methodology note filed.
T+02:30node --check engaged. Line 10, column identified. Apostrophe located. Case broken.
T+03:10Fix applied: what'swhat is. One word. Five characters. Zero contractions remaining.
T+03:20Syntax OK. JSDOM: PASS. Case closed.
IV. Secondary Finding
During the investigation, a second subject was discovered at the scene: sp.className, a variable referenced in syncPct() but never declared in any accessible scope. Cause: omission. Resolution: removed. This subject did not survive to runtime and was thus unable to contribute testimony. No funeral planned.
Official Ruling
One apostrophe. Two hundred and eighty-five lines. Every function unreachable. Total script failure. Time to resolution: under four minutes, including one misleading false lead. The fix was a single-word substitution. The character lost was a contraction. The contraction lost was what's. What remains is what is: longer, cleaner, and less dangerous in single-quoted strings.
V. Final Remarks
This was one character. It brought down 285 lines. It passed two QA passes undetected. It was defeated by node --check and a calm reread of line 10.

Respect the apostrophe.

It has been in this language since before const existed. It will be here after all of us.
