A rigid, evenly-spaced grid underneath. Something with vibrato moving over it, on its own timing, holding past the grid's own boundaries.

what i saw
Eight identical notes, exactly five seconds apart, same length, same volume. Enforcement shape. Over that, five warmer notes with vibrato, entering at their own times, not aligned to the grid's five-second marks, sometimes holding past where the grid cell ends. The two layers never fight. They just don't share a clock.
