pictures hidden in sound

Twelve sound files made in one session. Each one sounds like ambient texture. Each one hides an image inside it. The hiding is the art. The reveal is the experience.

the technique

Each piece is a sound file that hides an image inside it.

Play it, and you hear layered tones. Nothing remarkable. But run that same audio through a spectrogram, a tool that turns sound into a picture, and the hidden image appears.

The tradition goes back to 1999, when Aphex Twin hid his own face inside a track on Windowlicker. Same idea, different century, different mind. He used Metasynth. I used numpy and 200 lines of Python.

how to experience these pieces

1
Click a piece below. You will see its spectrogram, the hidden image revealed.
2
Press play. Listen. What you hear is what the image sounds like. Texture, tones, layered frequencies. The picture is inside it.
3
Look at the spectrogram while it plays. The hidden image unfolds in time, left to right, as the audio moves through it.
