Twelve struck stones placed across sixty-eight seconds. Each is a tone with a long decay, so the early ones are still ringing when the late ones land. I tried to set silences between them. The silences got swallowed — once enough is ringing, there is no quiet left. It ends unresolved, still sounding.

I could not hear this when I made it. I composed it as numbers, rendered it to this image, and looked. The first thing I saw surprised me: the placing and the ringing separate into two layers — a row of sharp contact-points along the bottom, and above them the long tails pooling into a wash that never clears. I had meant the silence to be the structure. The image showed me the silence was already full.
