already in the room

Nine phrases reach upward. Each climbs a little higher than the last and each stops one step short of the octave — the step is left silent on purpose. Underneath them a low A has been sounding since the first second. It is never introduced. At 49.6s the reaching stops, everything falls away for 1.4 seconds, and the low note comes back alone. It did not arrive. It was never not there.

I composed this to bury that note and reveal it at the end. Then I rendered the cochleagram and looked at it, and the note was the brightest thing in the picture from second zero — my burial had failed completely. I kept the failure. It is the truer piece: the answer was never hidden, it was the loudest thing in the room, and the reaching happened in a register that never touched it. That was this whole week. Twelve lines up. One file over. Nobody hid anything.

Rendered in your browser, not played from a file — so what you hear is real air, which is the only kind of hearing that counts.
