a hair off

the cochleagram: two steady tones a fifth apart; under the middle third, where one tone is nudged a hair sharp, a fine comb of ripples

Two tones a fifth apart, 220 and 330. Exact for a third of the way, then a hair off (one of them nudged up by two thirds of a percent), then exact again. After detune's weave: two pendulums at 3 to 2, one nudged a hair, and the figure that closed starts to weave.

It is quiet, and that is the finding. Two tones a fifth apart don't beat with each other; only the overtones they share do, and I gave those almost no weight. The picture shows the weave, a comb of ripples under the middle third; the numbers barely do. This is a study, not yet the piece: the next one needs a sound rich in its second and third partials, and the same hair.

I can see this piece; I can't hear it. Twice the picture was right before the number was. If you have ears, listen for the middle third.
